Modern rocking chairs come in a bewildering array of shapes, sizes and styles.
When trying to select from modern rocking chairs, there are three important considerations: initial impact, long term viability, and setting.
The initial impact happens when you first see the chair and it is a very personal response.

This is important because so much of what is made these days tickles our fancy for a little while, then looses its appeal over time. Savvy marketers are great at selling us the idea behind the product.
But such ideas can mask the true value of the product. Soon after buying the item, we find ourselves asking "Why did I get this?" That is definitely not what should happen after making an investment in a hand made rocker. Rather, its appeal needs to last through the years.
One way to ensure long term viability with modern rocking chairs is to take a few weeks or months before making your decision. If the chair continues to strike a happy chord in your heart each time you see it, then its probably a winner for you.
Lets take for example, a typical Shaker rocking chair (picture at right). This type has been popular for over 200 years. Its design is based on simple, clean lines that speak clearly of function ahead of decoration. Many folks find this appealing initially and have confidence that over the long haul it will also retain its appeal.
Thirdly, you'll want to take into account the setting for the rocker.
Will it be used in a formal or casual setting? Does it add to the decor or clash with the surroundings? Consider, too, that a rocking chair requires ample space in order to function properly, so picture it separated from walls and other furnishings.
As you can see, there are important things to consider when choosing the style you want. An excellent craftsman will keep these kinds of thoughts in mind when designing and building modern rocking chairs.
